Extreme Weather Resilient Birdhouses

The Cool Science team partnered with David Matute at MassArt and the Mass Audubon Boston Nature Center & Wildlife Sanctuary to engage sixty 4th and 5th grade students from the Haley Pilot School (Roslindale, MA) in designing birdhouses that are capable of withstanding extreme weather. The team visited the Haley Pilot School three days in June, 2023 to provide students with lessons on New England birds, extreme weather, and birdhouse construction.

Students then worked in teams to design birdhouses that are resilient to extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain and wind, extreme heat, and polar freezes. Students provided their birdhouse designs to David Matute who constructed the birdhouses.

In late December, 2023, the Cool Science team hosted a celebration event for the students and their families at the Boston Nature Center. The newly developed birdhouses will soon be installed at the Boston Nature Center just in time for spring birds to use for nesting. Pictures of the birdhouses and the event are below.
